👀 How to Identify It

The porcini (Boletus edulis) doesn’t always make it easy, but with a sharp eye you can spot it by these distinct features:


  • Cap: Large, rounded to flat, with a smooth to slightly leathery surface. Colors range from light brown to chestnut or even dark chocolate.

  • Pores: Instead of gills, porcini have fine tubes. They start off white, then turn yellow to olive green as they mature.

  • Stem: Thick, club-shaped, and decorated with a pale net-like pattern.

  • Flesh: Firm, white, and does not discolor when cut. You’ll feel its density the moment your knife slices through.

  • Habitat: They thrive in open woodlands, forest edges, and mossy spots. Look for them after summer storms when the air is warm and damp.

  • Season: Peak season runs late summer to fall, typically August through October.

  • Basket, not plastic: Always use a breathable basket so the mushrooms stay fresh and their spores spread naturally.

  • Protect the young: Harvest only mature specimens and leave the tiny ones behind to keep the population strong.

  • Beware of look-alikes: Some inedible or toxic boletes can resemble porcini. Golden rule: only pick what you can identify with certainty!
